A trick

What can't this iPhone do, anyhow? Well, WRITING, for one thing, is a little subpar. Oh, I'm plenty used to one-finger typing on the tiny keyboard, and the self-correcting that goes on is remarkable (it "learns" what you are apt to type, and sort of fixes things as you go along). Still, long blog posts aren't as apt to happen.

Unless... well here's something to try. I can type what I intend to say in an email on the clunky old laptop - just as I'm doing now. Then I can send it to myself and open it in the iPhone. This will be practically instantaneous. Then all I have to do is PASTE the text of the email into the iPhone blog software.

Tada!

Wind

Winds are howling, roof is leaking. Power is out all over town. It was a good day to stay inside and play with a grandbaby who is learning to walk.

Mirage

Having a hard time putting down this fascinating and well-written book - about Napoleon and his 1798 invasion of Egypt with fifty thousand troops and 150 engineers, doctors, and scientsts.

East West Market

Quick stop for Asian vegetables on the way home from bridge.

I really ought to buy fish there too. Just that it's a bit daunting

Good old cornstarch - ice cream?

Does any one even make good old cornstarch pudding any more? It was certainly a staple of my childhood , but I barely remember making it for my own family.

What brought me back to it was reading Mark Bittman's suggestion that it could easily pinch hit as an ice cream

base -as a substitute for the richer, more traditional egg yolk base.

What a revelation!

It works perfectly. I used the Joy of Cooking recipe for vanilla pudding using 1/2 half and half and 1/2 "skim plus" milk.

Freezing it in these little individual cups was my own idea. Easy portion control.
