Zyzzyva

Friday's NYT crossword is a tough one. We have ZYZZYVA (a type of boll weevil) crossing with MIZE (slugger nicknamed "Big Cat" - not to be confused with another slugger, Andres Galarraga, who was also nicknamed "Big Cat"), ENYA, DRESSSIZE, DYS, DAZS, and LEOVII (Byzantine emperor known as "The Wise"). And that's just one corner. Whew!

You know Zyzzyva is also a lit mag in SF?

Um no, but now I do. I see that they have a cool T shirt and a blog (Zyzzyvaspeaks). But why do they want to be associated with the boll weevil?

I think there's something about being either first or last in alphabetical lists that helps catch the eye..... e.g. "AAAA Plumbing" in the yellow pages. Probably they're also banking on the fact that people don't know what it means (kind of like _Agni_"?????).
